I met Nick on a press trip back in 1994, and never travelled with him again. But he was someone whose byline I always looked for, knowing that not only would it be a great read, but there would be plenty of insight into the bargain. We were both on a dream Zimbabwean press trip - two weeks long, five writers flown around the country on a private jet, from safari lodge to safari lodge. An incredibly wonderful introduction to Africa. But my favourite memory was when we had some free time in Harare and I told him that Mugabe was having one of his rare public forums. He was keen to go, and I was glad for the company, so we hopped in a taxi and used our press cards to get into the conference hall. For hours we watched Mugabe answer questions from groups handpicked by his handlers - the entire event created for national television consumption. It made for a fascinating afternoon, one we both wanted to write about. Hope to see him again, maybe on that big press trip in the sky.

" I'VE KNOWN NICK SINCE THE MID '70'S WHEN HE STAYED WITH ME IN NEW ORLEANS ON HIS WAY BACK FROM A FRUIT PICKING ADVENTURE. WE'VE REMAINED FRIENDS THROUGHOUT THE YEARS AND ALL THE MANY CHANGES IN HIS LIFE. I WAS NANNY TO HIS FIRST SON, ALEX. ALL I CAN THINK OF IS, HE WAS "ONE OF THE BEST" I WAS TERRIBLY SHOCKED, HAD BEREAKFAST WITH HE AND LAURIE A COUPLE OF WEEKS BEFORE HE LEFT FOR GREECE. THE NEWS OF HIS DEATH WAS SO UNTIMELY, I WILL MISS HIM. MY LOVE AND COMPASSION GO OUT TO ALL OF HIS FAMILY.
