On February 18 – 24, the second annual Mayakoba Golf Classic, a PGA event, will take place at the El Camaleon Golf Course, a Greg Norman design constructed along the beach and mangroves about 40 miles south of Cancun, near Puerto Morelos. This is the only regular-season, official PGA tournament in Mexico.
The event winner from 2007, Fred Funk, will be returning, and committments have been received from ever-popular John Daly and Hall of Fame member Nick Price, as well as driving distance champ Bubba Watson.
There have been many competitve golf courses built in Mexico over the past 20 years, including designs by Jack Nicklaus, Tom Weiskopf, Robert von Hagge, and Robert Trent Jones, attracting golfers from the world-over. Although green fees are out of reach for most Mexicans (as much as $275 in Cancun), the courses do give tourists another reason to visit the country.
