Mexico Shrinks Its Coinage

By MP Mexico News Staff

In an effort to save some 300 million pesos in production and energy costs, Banco de México has begun circulating new metal 10, 20 and 50-centavo coins. These new, smaller coins are made from a stainless steel alloy instead of  copper, zinc and nickel alloys. The new coinage 10, 20 and 50 centavo coins will also have a longer life.

We’re still awaiting the final say from the citizens on whether they like these new coins or not, but so far, the reception has been lukewarm.
