Lorena Ochoa, the world’s best female golfer, will host an LPGA event at the course where she learned to play, The Guadalajara Country Club. The first event will be November 13 – 16, 2008, and is slated to continue yearly through 2012. The tournament will count towards the official money list and the Rolex World Golf Rankings.
The prize money will total $1million dollars and is being provided by Banamex and Corona. Ochoa was recently named Player of the Year on the LPGA tour and has surpassed Annika Sorenstam of Sweden as the world’s best player. The two golfers are the only players named to host their own LPGA tournaments.
Ochoa is an iconic figure in Mexico, and a hero to young girls throughout the country. Unfortunately, very few of them can afford to play the game, where typical green fees can exceed a week’s wages for the average worker.
