International Bodysurfing Open Tournament “Las Escolleras” 2008

For the second consecutive year, Playa Las Escolleras in Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo will host the International Bodysurf Open Tournament, to be held May 17 and 18, 2008 with some of the best bodysurfers in the world. The reigning champion J. Manuel Suazo will defend his title among national and foreign contestants such as Mike O’Neal (USA) and Bret Belyea (Can). Some of the outstanding Mexican contestants include Gabriel Cortés, Alfredo Serna and Fidel Cisneros.

Bodysurfing, considered the most extreme water sport ever practiced, consists of surfing the waves with nothing else than a pair of flippers. It is a sport that has been practiced since the beginning of time, believed to be pioneered by the Polynesians, who ultimately spread it all around the world. The intimacy that is achieved between the person and the waves is indescribable.

More that ten Bodysurf tournaments are held worldwide each year, but the Pipeline Classic is the most important since it includes the most renowned contestants in the world. Two exhibition contests will also take place during the event: the Bodyboard Aerial Show and the Surfboard Show. Participants will perform their best aerial tricks on the impressive waves of Las Escolleras Beach.

The International Bodysurf Open Tournament is a non-profit event which promotes the practice of extreme sports in Mexico. Registration is free. Awards will be given to the first six (6) places in the Bodysurf Category, and to the first three (3) places in the Bodyboard and Surfboard Categories.
