The Nick Gallo Award for Journalistic Excellence Presented at Tianguis in Acapulco

By: Lisa Coleman

Yes, there was threat of flu, and yes, there was an earthquake, but in all honesty, neither of those things were the focus for us at the annual Tianguis Turistico trade show in Acapulco earlier this week. We came for Mexico, to promote tourism and push forward despite the hurdles. And, for those of us at Mexico Premiere, we were able to embrace the works of freelance writers and honor our friend and colleague, Nick Gallo.

The Nick Gallo Award really evolved into something amazing for all of us. We are so appreciative of our sponsors – Mexico Boutique Hotels (with a special call out to Sylvie Laitre at MBH for all tremendous help and support!) and AeroMexico. We were also thrilled to have Javier Paez and the destination of Mazatlan host our inaugural presentation.

It was perfect, really. The award was presented at the Mazatlan breakfast event on Monday, April 27. We had a packed house of almost 200 people including governors, mayors, members of the Mexico Tourism Board, and freelance writers. I gave a brief overview of the award and then turned it over to Nick’s son, Alex to present the award. If you were lucky enough to have known Nick Gallo, you knew he had a certain energy and intelligence that needs few words. Alex is indeed his father’s son… an incredibly poised young man full of charisma, style and promise that would make his father proud. Alex spoke of his father and read a letter from his mother (Laurie). There wasn’t a dry eye in the place.

Alex then presented the Nick Gallo Award to Dan Millington, a freelance writer/photographer that has deep roots in Mexico. Dan and Nick were good friends so it made it all the sweeter. His winning article “The Lure of Loreto” (published in Horizon Air Magazine) will be posted on the site next week along with the speeches and more photographs.

On behalf of David and Lola, I want to say a heartfelt “thank you” to everyone who helped make this wonderful award possible. We had so much positive press and feedback that we know this is just the beginning of solid future for Nick’s legacy. Stay tuned for more.

  1. Thanks very much for your well-written report, Lisa. I’m sorry that I was unable to attend the award presentation in Acapulco. Glad to hear that everything went well in spite of the flu scare. Like everyone else, I’m looking forward to hearing more about the event.

  2. Thank you Lisa for your warm tribute to Nick and his legacy. It is wonderful that this year’s recipient, Dan Millington, was a friend of Nick’s, something I’m sure Nick would have loved as he always had a deep interest in and love for his fiends. I met Nick and Laurie sometime around 1972 and remained close friends since…and although all of us who knew him were so deeply saddened at his all to early passing it puts a smile on my face to know how much he is respected by the journalistic community….and Nick LOVED Mexico through and through.
    Congrats to this year’s winner.
    Ellen Morrow
